KINGSTON, Jamaica — In the first six months of 2026, the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) has seized more cocaine than the combined total of six consecutive years (2016-2021), and it is the highest amount seized in the past 10 years. Police say since the start of the year, they have seized over 5,100 kilograms (more than 11,000 pounds) of cocaine, with an estimated street value of approximately J$3 billion. Within the last decade, between 2016 and 2025, lawmen seized a total of 11,852 kilograms of cocaine.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) is reporting an emerging synthetic drug threat within Jamaica’s border environment, with an increase in MDMA/ecstasy detections between January 2024 up to June 5, 2026. In a statement on Wednesday, the agency said during the period under review, the JCA detected a cumulative total of 34,292 Ecstasy/MDMA tablets and pills. Noting that while the number of detections remains relatively low when compared to traditional narcotics such as cocaine and marijuana, customs highlighted that the quantity of tablets per shipment and the emergence of recurring detections indicate the diversification of transnational criminal activity and the growing exposure of Jamaica to international synthetic drug supply chains.

KINGSTON, Jamaica—Up to 1,500 tourism workers who suffered loss as a result of Hurricane Melissa have benefitted from the Government’s $2 billion Tourism Housing Assistance Recovery Programme (THARP). The fund was established in December 2025 to help tourism workers stabilise livelihoods and recover after Hurricane Melissa devastated southwestern parishes last October. Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said the THARP, which is funded through the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), provided non-repayable $100,000 grants and critical building materials for tourism workers whose homes were damaged or destroyed.

KINGSTON, Jamaica–The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) is reporting that operations at the hospital have returned to normal after nurses from the Accident and Emergency Department reportedly walked off the job on Tuesday to register their concerns surrounding overcrowding and aspects of the work environment at the hospital. UHWI management team, in a press release on Tuesday, said measures have been implemented to address the immediate concerns, including the transfer of patients from the Accident and Emergency Department to inpatient wards to reduce congestion and improve patient flow. KINGSTON, Jamaica — Child advocacy group Fi We Children Foundation (FWCF) says it is offering free legal assistance to parents and guardians of students who have been barred from graduation ceremonies because of school grooming policies. KINGSTON, Jamaica—Seventy-nine per cent of students exiting primary school in June 2026 have demonstrated mastery of literacy, while 75 per cent have mastered numeracy. Literacy and numeracy competencies were assessed at the grade-six level of the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) for the first time this year. KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People's National Party (PNP) Women's Movement is demanding answers from the Government amid reports that Jamaica has agreed to participate in a United States (US) third-country nationals (TCN) arrangement. According to the group, reports suggest that a senior Jamaican Government official volunteered Jamaica's participation in the programme, under which the US seeks to remove individuals it wants out of its territory to countries other than their own, even if people have never been there before, have no connections in the country and don’t speak the language. The PNP Women's Movement said its concerns have been heightened by comments made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during an April 2025 interview.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness was circumspect on Monday when he responded to a question about the state of the investigation by the Financial Investigations Division (FID) into his unverified statutory declarations. The matter was referred to the FID by the Integrity Commission (IC) which failed to reach a conclusion after probing the financial affairs of the prime minister during a lengthy investigation that was made public nearly two years ago. KINGSTON, Jamaica— The Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) Agricultural Protection Branch (APB) is warning the public to exercise caution when purchasing beef following the illegal slaughter of eight cows in Clarendon between Friday and Saturday. Reports from the Area 3 APB Team are that about 1:30 am Saturday, a farmer discovered that eight of his cows had been stolen. The animals were later discovered slaughtered near the PJ Patterson Highway in the vicinity of St Jago Road and Duke Street in Clarendon.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved a US$2.1 million readiness grant submitted by the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), on behalf of Jamaica, boosting the country’s ability to access climate finance and build resilience to a changing climate. The grant, entitled “Catalysing Climate Action by building Jamaica’s NDA Capacity & Country Investment Platform”, will help Jamaica access international climate financing and develop a pipeline of projects needed to protect its people, economy and environment. The project proposal was developed under the United Kingdom (UK) funded Small Island Developing States Capacity and Resilience Programme (SIDAR) for the Caribbean, which aims to increase Caribbean member states’ access to climate finance and accelerate climate-resilient action across the region.

KINGSTON, Jamaica— JN Bank more than tripled its net profit to $1.45 billion for the financial year ended March 31, 2026, helped by stronger income growth and a sharp reduction in credit impairment losses. The result compared with net profit of $439 million in the previous financial year, while profit before tax rose to $2.29 billion. Operating profit increased to $2.81 billion from $862 million as income grew faster than expenses, although the bank said operating costs increased modestly during the year.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Motorists who are heading to Clarendon along the PJ Patterson highway are being advised that a section of the highway is impassable as a result of a traffic collision. Motorists heading towards Clarendon must exit at the Spanish Town toll and continue via Old Harbour Road. KINGSTON, Jamaica — Opposition Leader Mark Golding is calling for the immediate removal of Dr Andrew Wheatley from his position as minister without portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, following the tabling of an Integrity Commission (IC) Investigation Report recommending multiple charges against him. In a statement Wednesday evening, Golding noted that based on that report, the director of corruption prosecution determined that Dr Wheatley is to be charged with four criminal charges, including illicit enrichment, knowingly making false statements in statutory declarations and failing to provide information to the director of information and complaints as required by law. "A minister who has been recommended for prosecution on four criminal charges, including the serious offence of illicit enrichment, cannot be allowed to remain in the Cabinet of Jamaica.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Cabinet Minister Dr Andrew Wheatley is rejecting as “patently false, inaccurate and grossly misleading” a claim by the Integrity Commission (IC) that there was a $164 million disproportionality in his assets versus his lawful earnings over a nine year period. Wheatley, the minister without portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister responsible for science, technology and special projects, in his defence has cited $168 million in rental income which he says has been ignored. “I strongly and categorically reject as patently false, grossly misleading and inaccurate the allegations by the Director of Investigations,” Wheatley said in a statement to the media following the tabling in Parliament of the IC report, which included the allegations, on Wednesday, “I intend to read the report in full but from a cursory review subsequent to its tabling this afternoon, I must indicate that it is odd, unreasonable and unfair that in arriving at his conclusion, the Director of Investigations clearly decided not to take into account approximately 168-million in rental income which I lawfully accumulated and declared over the nine years,” added Wheatley, who is also the Member of Parliament for St Catherine South Central.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Opposition Spokesman on Environment and Climate Resilience Omar Newell has criticised recent comments by Environment Minister Matthew Samuda linking Jamaica's biggest mangrove threat to the illegal cutting of trees for firewood, arguing that the claims are inconsistent with findings in the Government's National Mangrove and Swamp Forest Management Plan 2023–2033. Newell's criticism follows a Jamaica Observer article on June 15 which quoted Samuda as saying, “The biggest issue affecting our mangroves is the illegal cutting of them to be used for firewood.” “If you don’t reduce poverty, mangroves become charcoal, and that’s where we have significant degradation of our mangrove forest — not from housing developments or commercial developments,” added Samuda at a Rotaract District 7020 Conference at Ocean Coral Spring Resort in Trelawny last Friday. KINGSTON, Jamaica — Global oil prices fell below US$80 a barrel on Tuesday as anexpected agreement between the United States (US) and Iran raised hopes that more crude could return to the market and ease pressure on fuel-importing countries such as Jamaica. A Supreme Court judge on Monday granted an interim injunction to restrain councillor of the Rae Town Division in Kingston, Rosalie Hamilton, from making any further statements that are deemed false and defamatory against Donovan Williams, the Member of Parliament (MP) of Kingston Central. The interim injunction was granted until July 13, at which time a judge is expected to hear submissions and make further ruling. The Jamaica Observer was given access to the document on Monday by a source close to the matter.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Port Antonio police have arrested a 15-year-old school boy after he allegedly fatally stabbed a male on the Foreshore Road in the vicinity of the bus park about 4:20 Monday afternoon. The dead male has been identified as Jeremy Ferguson also known as Tarzan, whose age has not yet been determined by the police. Initial reports are that the accused and three other school boys were gambling behind a public lavatory close to the bus park when a fracas developed.

Kemar Mitchell of a Kingston 17 address is set to appear before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court to answer to murder charges following the May 9 incident where Kemelia was allegedly injured while trying to break up a fight between Mitchell and her mother. The death of the grade seven student has triggered mourning across the country.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Within the next few months, the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) will have the capacity to independently verify the quality of telecommunications services being provided to the public. KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister without Portfolio with responsibility for Works, Robert Morgan says the recent move by Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) Chairman Andrew Swaby to increase divisional allocation fund provisions confirms that the mayor can do more to address parish council roads. The KSAMC announced that allocations will move from $10 million to $13 million for urban divisions, and to $13.5 million for rural divisions. KINGSTON, Jamaica—Flow has officially launched Jamaica's first 5G mobile network, opening the door to faster downloads, clearer calls and improved connectivity for thousands of customers already equipped with 5G-ready devices. The telecommunications provider announced on Thursday that the network is already available across Kingston, Portmore, Spanish Town, May Pen and the North Coast, with coverage reaching about 70 per cent of the population. The man has been identified as 50-year-old Maurice Alphanso Fennel, of a Cambridge, St James address. Earlier Thursday, Bradshaw’s legal team indicated her willingness to plead guilty under section 2 (2) of the Offences Against the Person Act, but the parties were unable to come to any agreement.
