Days before Colombians go to the polls to elect their next president, a group of parliamentarians from various nations expressed through a letter their concern about the electoral panorama in Colombia and demanded certain guarantees. The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Latin America and Caribbean Group (Grulac) expressed concern about the scenario of violence in Colombia, as they state they have become aware of "various public and institutional complaints related to threats against political leaders, presidential candidates, parliamentarians and opposition leaders, including particularly the threats suffered by senator Paloma Valencia and other Colombian political leaders." In the document, the parliamentarians recall the "serious precedent represented by the assassination of Senator and presidential precandidacy Miguel Uribe Turbay, which occurred in 2025" and expressed uncertainty about "territorial political violence, presence of criminal structures in certain regions of the country" and "possible restrictions on the free exercise of political rights." Due to this, these parliamentary organizations request that the Colombian State "adopt all necessary measures in order to guarantee the life, integrity and security of presidential candidates, parliamentarians, political leaders, journalists, social leaders and citizens." Likewise, they ask to "fully preserve the independence, legitimacy and credibility of Colombian electoral authorities," avoiding narratives that erode public confidence in the results.
