The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has banned 16 fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs, including several antibiotic-based formulations, in a move aimed at curbing irrational drug use and addressing the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the country. The prohibition has been issued under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, following a scientific review by an expert committee constituted under the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB). The committee concluded that the risks associated with these formulations outweigh their claimed benefits and that they lack therapeutic justification.
