On Wednesday afternoon, when Junaid Ahmad, a young farmer from Mazhama village, about seven kilometres from Shopian town in south Kashmir, returned from his orchard, the outlook appeared promising. Branches were laden with small green apples, raising hopes of a bumper harvest after months of labour. Within hours, those hopes were shattered.
