India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is visiting Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago from May 2–10, 2026, to strengthen India's relationship with Girmitiya communities—descendants of Indian indentured laborers who were transported to these territories under exploitative colonial labor agreements. The visit reflects India's Nehruvian approach of supporting cultural and spiritual ties with overseas Indian diaspora while respecting their political loyalty to their countries of residence, and continues New Delhi's policy of nurturing relationships with communities of Indian origin globally.
