‘Move more, sit less, early action can ensure a healthier tomorrow’ Srinagar, Jun 25: Diabetes mellitus is emerging as a major public health challenge in Jammu and Kashmir, with health experts warning that rapid lifestyle changes, rising obesity, unhealthy dietary habits, and physical inactivity are contributing to an alarming increase in the disease across the Union Territory. According to the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) 2023-24 Biomarker Data, 13 percent of women and 11.3 percent of men aged 15 years and above in Jammu and Kashmir have high blood sugar levels (above 140 mg/dl) or are taking medication for diabetes. The prevalence is significantly higher in urban areas, where 17 percent of women and 14.6 percent of men are affected, compared to 11.9 percent and 10.3 percent respectively in rural areas.
