Joburg’s Market Theatre has entered its 51st year as a major cultural, intellectual and even political influence in South Africa – and the wider world. It is important to recall the society it was born into, as well as the bravery and imagination of its cofounders – Barney Simon and Mannie Manim – in bringing it to life.
