The Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) at the Super Speciality Hospital, Government Medical College (SSH-GMC), Jammu, has been performing open-heart surgeries on children, born with heart defects like hole in the chambers of the heart and other associated complicated anomalies, under Ayushman Bharat Scheme. Head of the Department Dr Shyam Singh informs that the spectrum of diseases operated include abnormal connection between large arteries arising from the heart (PDA); narrowing of the large artery arising from the heart (coarctation of aorta); hole between the upper chambers of the heart (atrial septal defect ASD); ASD with abnormal drainage of blood from lungs to heart; hole between the lower chambers of the heart (Ventricular Septal Defect VSD) and complicated heart defects like tetralogy of fallot. “The age of the patients ranged from 1 year to 18 years coming from the length and breadth of Jammu and Kashmir.
