As far as I have been able to understand, and based on many crime films and series that, for reasons unknown to me, occupy the largest space of TV and film production, every investigation of a criminal offense of any kind fundamentally considers the motive of the perpetrator, the manner in which the criminal act was performed and the available facts of the criminal act itself.
