The Taliban claim that by “Islamizing” education they are restoring Afghanistan’s authentic Islamic educational tradition. Historically, however, this claim does not withstand scrutiny. Afghanistan’s educational heritage, from mosque schools (maktab-khanas) to madrasas and Sufi lodges (khanqahs), was never confined to the memorization of religious texts or the teaching of legal rulings.
