Khaled Al-Najjar appeared to continue exercising authority even from afar. Having orchestrated the killing and escaped to Syria, he remained the dominant figure around whom the defense was built. As long as he remained beyond the reach of Dutch authorities, he could be presented as the principal culprit, absorbing responsibility for the crime and shielding the two sons standing before the court.
