The 6.0-magnitude earthquake that shook Hawaii island on May 22 wasn’t caused by volcanic activity, as Hawaii’s quakes more often are, but by a tectonic plate flexing under the islands’ weight. That sent seismologists on a bee-line for the Kona-side epicenter, within Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park.
