I was painting the headscarf of a twelve-year-old girl with hazel eyes, using shades of green, red, blue, and indigo. The colors were bright and hopeful, the kind I had always dreamed of wearing myself. Yet for more than four years, I have worn only black and dark-colored headscarves.
