In the Bergama district of Izmir, Ismail Araç, a karatabak (master craftsman) titled UNESCO "Living Human Treasure," one of the last representatives in the world to continue parchment production from antiquity using traditional methods, passed away at the age of 93. The century-old master, who died after entrusting his 71-year-long craft—to which he dedicated his life—to his apprentices, was laid to rest on his final journey.
