The Arctic Ocean passed a chemical point of no return in 2009, when the level of nitrates in its surface waters dropped sharply and has not recovered since. This is the conclusion reached by scientists who analyzed data collected over more than twenty years of observations in the Fram Strait. The research was published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment.
