The European Union imposed a fine of 200 million euros ($232 million) on Chinese e-commerce company Temu on Thursday for allowing the sale of illegal products to European consumers, including dangerous toys for children and defective chargers. After an investigation that began in October 2024, the European Commission concluded that the company failed to identify, analyze, and assess the systemic risks associated with the sale of illegal products on its platform, as well as the resulting harm to consumers in the European Union. The European Commission emphasized that Temu violated its consumer protection obligations imposed on large digital platforms under the European Digital Services Act.
