With the arrival of Muharram al-Haram, a great portion of the world’s attention turns—as it has always turned—towards that momentous event which stands among the most profound tragedies in human history. It was on the plains of Karbala that the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ, Sayyiduna Hussain ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), together with his small but devoted band of companions, offered a sacrifice in the cause of truth and justice so extraordinary and so unparalleled that history has seldom witnessed anything comparable. Perhaps this is why, when we look across the vast panorama of history, we find mighty rulers and celebrated conquerors whose names once thundered across continents and before whom nations trembled.
