The abrupt closure of a Tyson plant in Lexington stunned the community, which had developed as a multicultural hub because of the job opportunities. Dawson County’s unemployment rate ballooned from 3% in 2025 nearly 20% in April. The Federal Reserve in Kansas City has estimated that the unemployment rate could reach as high as 27% over the next three years as the aftershocks set in on the county’s economy.
