Bălan was investigated for attempted treason involving the transmission of state secrets to Belarusian intelligence services during meetings in Budapest between 2024-2025, with initial collaboration involving Russian intelligence. The case, coordinated under EUROJUST with support from Romania, Hungary, and Czech Republic authorities, resulted in an 18-month sentence from Chișinău courts.
