Fish stocks off the coasts of West Africa are in crisis, with emblematic species like round sardinella facing gradual collapse. The depletion stems from multiple factors including illegal foreign industrial fishing, expansion of fishmeal factories, intensified catch pressure, and inadequate coordination among regional states—threatening food security and economic stability across Senegal, Mauritania, Gambia, Guinea, and the wider sub-region.
