The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the approval of the first treatment specifically for malaria in infants, a move described as a “major public health breakthrough” that paves the way for its widespread use globally. The drug, called Coartem Baby, is designed to treat newborns, including those weighing as little as 2 kilograms, filling a treatment gap that has persisted for years. Previously, drugs intended for older children were used, increasing the risk of dosing errors and side effects.
