Two major Brazilian federal universities have issued formal apologies for their historical use of unclaimed corpses from psychiatric patients in anatomy courses. The Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) and Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) acknowledged receiving bodies from the Colônia de Barbacena Hospital, where an estimated 60,000 people died during the 20th century under conditions of severe neglect and abuse. Between 1962 and 1971, UFJF received 169 such bodies; across 17 medical institutions, approximately 1,853 corpses were used in teaching. Both universities have committed to educational initiatives on human rights and mental health, and have since implemented voluntary body donation programs.
