Hantavirus can be transmitted from rodents to humans, and it was from Ushuaia that the Hondius began its journey with the passengers now on board. Argentine investigators have a hypothesis that a Dutch couple caught the virus while birdwatching at a garbage dump. The couple died from the disease.
