From the early days of independent Ukraine until the war launched by Russia in 2022, Ukraine suffered greatly from its reputation as an “oligarchic state.” But the Russian invasion had an unexpected effect that neither the efforts of the Ukrainian authorities nor pressure from outside the country could produce: it brought some of the country’s most powerful oligarchs to their knees, significantly weakening or even destroying the empires of these tycoons.
