The mayor of Villa de Leyva in Boyacá, Colombia, Víctor Alfonso Gamboa Chaparro, has been jailed on charges of extortion and bribery. According to recorded conversations, he allegedly demanded a 20% commission from a contractor working on a $6 million real estate project in exchange for expediting environmental and construction permits. After initially declining, the contractor reported the conversation to prosecutors. Gamboa later claimed he was the victim of a setup.
