Romania has developed some of Europe's most burdensome energy bills relative to consumer purchasing power, despite possessing cheap hydroelectric capacity, stable nuclear generation, internal gas reserves, and expanding renewables, according to Dumitru Chisăliță, president of the Smart Energy Association. He attributes the problem to systemic inefficiencies across the entire energy sector, which generate additional costs and profits from market instability rather than production costs alone.
